Say Goodbye to Pigmented Lesions for Good

Pigmented lesions can vary in size, shape, and depth. Some are no bigger than a fingertip or even a pinhead, while others may be as large as a hand and occur in conspicuous places such as the face, neck, or arms. Regardless of their size, however, they can be a constant source of frustration, keeping you from seeing your ideal reflection in the mirror each day. If this sounds like your experience, HVME is here for you. Using advanced laser treatments, we can effectively reduce the presence of a wide range of pigmented lesions on the face and other parts of the body. Once you’ve visited our San Francisco or Marin County offices for your initial consultation, we’ll assess your pigmented lesions and work with you to craft a customized care plan that sees you enjoying your ideal complexion, every day. When you’re ready to get started, simply reach out and set up your consultation at one of our convenient locations.

What are Pigmented Lesions?

Pigmentation is the color in your skin produced by melanin, a natural pigment that also determines eye and hair color. If too much melanin is produced in one area, however, it causes the development of a darker-tinged or brown patch on your skin.

This overproduction of melanin—and the pigmented lesions it creates—can be caused by a variety of factors:

  • Sun exposure
  • The aging process
  • Heredity conditions
  • Congenital factors

Types of Pigmented Lesions

At HVME, our team has an extensive degree of experience treating pigmented lesions. Your provider will help you understand exactly which type of pigmented lesions you have before helping you understand which treatment option will be the most effective. Common types of pigmented lesions include:

Age Spots or “Liver” Spots

These lesions are smaller, darkened patches that usually appear on older adults who have been exposed to the sun for many years. These spots can be seen on the face,  the forearms, and the backs of the hands.

Post-inflammatory Hyperpigmentation

This type of hyperpigmentation results from any inflammatory injury or trauma to the skin. Acne, for example, can often leave behind dark discoloration after a blemish heals. Conditions that cause rashes—like psoriasis and eczema—often darken the skin as well.

Am I the Ideal Candidate for Pigmented Lesion Treatments?

Your experience with HVME will always start with a consultation that gives you a chance to get to know your provider while your provider gets to know you and your cosmetic goals. During this consultation, your provider will learn about your skin type and the specific pigmented lesions that you wish to address so they can help you confirm whether or not you’ll be a good candidate for this treatment.

Your Treatment Experience

You will need to avoid the sun, tanning beds, and self-tanning creams and lotions prior to treatment. There may be some medications that you will need to avoid, and we will cover them during your consultation.

Treatments are very well tolerated. Many clients describe the treatment as a ‘warm sensation’ or the snap of a rubber band. The procedure typically takes less than 20 minutes to perform depending on the size of the area or the number of pigmented lesions being treated. Often you will see great results after the first treatment session but 2-3 sessions may be required for optimal outcomes.

After the Procedure Enjoying Your Results

Some patients experience a sensation similar to what one might feel with a mild sunburn for a short time after the procedure, and we may apply some ice immediately following your treatment to help minimize this effect. Your pigmented lesions will darken over the next few days, and the treatment area may even look a bit “dirty” or dark for about a week. This is completely normal, however, and you’ll notice the skin sloughing off during this time, revealing fresh new skin.

Most patients are able to resume their regular daily activities immediately following their treatment sessions. Makeup can be applied to the treated area immediately, if necessary, and it is extremely important to apply a moisturizer with SPF30 sunblock while avoiding sun exposure on a daily basis to prevent additional sun damage. Some patients require multiple treatment sessions to achieve their ideal results, and we’ll work with you to develop a schedule that aligns nicely with your personal routine.
