What Causes Acne Scars?
Acne scars develop when inflammation from deep-seated acne lesions, such as cysts or nodules, disrupts the skin’s natural healing process. The result is either of the following:
- Depressed (atrophic) scars, where collagen loss creates indentations in the skin
- Raised (hypertrophic) scars, which occur when excess collagen forms during healing
Several factors, including genetics, prolonged acne, and picking at blemishes, can increase the likelihood of scarring. Identifying the type of scarring you have is key to determining the most effective treatment.
