Topical scarring can be left behind by injury, trauma, or a prior surgical procedure. If you’re feeling frustrated by the presence of keloid scars, our compassionate team is here to help.
What Causes Keloid Scars?
Keloid scars develop when your body’s natural healing response goes into overdrive and causes an overproduction of collagen in your skin as the scar tissue forms. In most cases, your body uses collagen to rebuild damaged tissue.
When keloid scars form, however, this normal growth continues beyond what’s necessary, creating a raised, thickened scar that can even exceed the original wound area. In many cases, genetics actually play a significant role, with some individuals simply being more prone to keloid scar formation than others. Although keloids can appear anywhere on the body, they are commonly found on the chest, shoulders, and earlobes.
